In 1659, he declared himself the ruler of an independent Maratha kingdom and began a campaign to expand his territory and resist Mughal rule.

Shivaji is remembered for his innovative military tactics, which included the use of guerrilla warfare and surprise attacks to defeat larger enemy forces. He was also a skilled diplomat and was able to form alliances with other powerful Indian states, which helped him in his efforts to resist Mughal domination.
